Understand Your Field Data Requirements

Impact Assessments are typically required when the Provincial Government determines that there is a potential for impacts to Historical Resources.

These studies are referred to by province-specific terminology such as Historical Resources Impact Assessments (HRIAs) in Alberta, Heritage Resources Impact Assessments (HRIAs) in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIAs) in British Columbia, but in all Provinces the goals and methods are similar: conduct fieldwork-based studies to determine if Historical Resources are present within the boundaries of a proposed development.

Having completed more than 2,100 Impact Assessment studies throughout Western Canada and the Northern Territories, you can count on us to streamline your approvals process.

Historical Resources Impact Assessments

(Archaeological and Palaeontological)

During the completion of Impact Assessment studies, our experienced specialists will:

  • Carefully explain the process to you, and fully discuss all timelines and costs to complete the work;
  • Obtain all necessary permits to conduct archaeological and/or palaeontological fieldwork;
  • Prepare all field programs, taking care to ensure compliance to industry safety requirements, landowner access restrictions, and developer schedules;
  • Undertake thorough field reconnaissance of the project lands to assess the presence and significance of historical resources. Field studies will ensure full compliance to all Government-issued regulatory documents;
  • Complete Archaeological and/or Palaeontological Site recording and assessment, including shovel testing, preparation of sediment profiles, site photography, site sketch mapping, and GPS positioning of sites;
  • Collect, catalogue, and prepare identified historical artifacts for archival submission;
  • Prepare final Impact Assessment reports with all required supporting data, including recommendations for avoidance and/or mitigation of impacts to significant Historical Resources observed during the fieldwork;
  • Prepare and submit Impact Assessment reports to the applicable Provincial agency (such as the Historical Resources Management Branch of Alberta Arts, Culture, and Status of Women, for example);
  • Continue to liaise with government regulators to ensure that their report reviews and responses are completed within the timelines required for your successful project development.
